NAGA Convention Feature: Biosecurity in Year 3 of Avian Influenza

Well wishers had been counting on a quiet year after more than two years of avian influenza across the country. Unfortunately, HPAI continues to be a major issue of concern for poultry businesses including the gamebird industry.

The question now is what is left to do? For three years, the NAGA has provided up to date prevention, biosecurity, and preparedness education on HPAI. But the truth is, there is more to do, and on February 4th, attendees will hear from one of the nation’s top experts in this field.

The Wednesday morning session of the convention will feature former NAGA Person of the Year, The University of Minnesota’s Dr. Carol Cardona, who will present, “Beyond Booties and Dutch Entry Doors: What Biosecurity Looks Like 3 Years Into Avian Influenza.”

“Carol has been an invaluable counselor to the gamebird industry for more than a decade now,” noted NAGA President, Mike Martz. “We can’t rest on what we’ve done in the past, and no one has more credibility on how we need to prepare for avian influenza. We’re grateful she will be with us once again.”

Dr. Cardona led the effort to create a Secure Upland Gamebird Supply Plan and has worked directly with gamebird businesses that have been impacted by HPAI. Her dedication to the industry led the NAGA to recognize her with the 2023 Person of the Year Award.

The 2026 NAGA Convention (Feb. 2-4) brings in presenters with national expertise and credibility. Dr. Cardona is just one you won’t want to miss. Registration remains open and can be found with hotel, agenda, vendor and sponsor information at NorthAmericanGamebird.com.
