Avoiding the Next Burbank: Why Your Presence at the Hunting Club Conference Matters

Build the network that protects our future....

From 1994 to 2011, anti-hunting groups repeatedly attacked the use of dogs for hunting in state legislatures and at the ballot box. The animal rights lobby especially targeted California, attempting to ban the use of dogs to hunt black bears four times. Each time, California sportsmen, led by the Sportsmen’s Alliance, organized and defeated the attempted bans – though with increasingly narrow margins.

In 2011, the bill to ban bear hunting with dogs came down to just one vote: a state senator from Burbank. Until then, sportsmen had prevailed time after time by activating hunters in the districts of key senators. But in 2011, that one key senator was from Burbank. Despite our best efforts, we could not locate any sportsmen or women to defend hunting. It has now been 14 years since hunting bears with dogs became illegal, but the lesson for gamebird businesses remains just as urgent.

We’re only as strong as the weakest link in our national network. One of the main reasons the North American Gamebird Association (NAGA) created the Hunting Club Conference was to grow that network across the country—so when the time comes, we can call on it to protect our industry.

When the moment arrives, will gamebird businesses be able to reach the senators and members of Congress who will cast the votes that determine our future?

If you’re on the fence about attending the 4th Annual NAGA Hunting Club Conference in Tunica, Mississippi, consider this: Your presence and participation July 21–23 will help strengthen and expand the reach of our industry.

From a business perspective, the agenda is packed with practical, profit-driving, business-saving information. But from a long-term view, much like the NSSF SHOT Show or the NRA Annual Meeting, the event is also about becoming more effective at speaking with one voice.

Economically, the conference is as affordable as anyone could ask – between low registration fees and inexpensive hotel rates. Considering the value of the business sessions, networking opportunities, and the impact of strengthening our collective voice, the Hunting Club Conference is time and money well spent.

More important, it’s an investment in building the defenses that will protect our future as we work to fill in the “Burbanks” that still exist in our network.
