Are European Shoots a Good Fit for Your Club?

At this year’s NAGA Hunting Club Conference, Jake Toonkel of New York’s Pawling Mountain Club will explain the key differences between European shoots and field hunts, helping clubs weigh the pros and cons of each style....

One of the hallmarks of the annual national gathering of gamebird hunting preserves is the open exchange of knowledge among operations of all sizes. Whether it’s swapping stories over drinks or trading tips between sessions, the willingness to share practical, hard-earned experience is part of what makes this event essential for industry professionals. But many times, invaluable information is shared straight from the podium.

On Wednesday morning at this year’s NAGA Hunting Club Conference, Jake Toonkel of New York’s Pawling Mountain Club will take the stage for the first time to present European Shoots vs. Field Hunts: The Pros, Cons and Differences.

“European shoots are very popular and lucrative for many clubs across the country, including for corporate events,” explained NAGA Hunting Club Conference Chairman Dan Barngrover, of Kansas Longtail Farms. “Deciding to offer Europeans relies on a good understanding of what they entail including both advantages and disadvantages. That’s why we’re so grateful to have Pawling Mountain provide one of our featured speakers.”

Pawling Mountain Club brings a strong reputation, offering diverse woodland and open-field hunting with sweeping views of the Catskills. Their regulation-range facilities offer traditional sporting clays for the formal shooter or informal games—ideal for sharpening shooting skills.

Jake's presentation is just one of more than a dozen scheduled for the 4th Annual NAGA Hunting Club Conference, happening July 21–23 at the Horseshoe Hotel and Casino in Tunica, Mississippi.
